In 2023, the Bureau of Border and Foreign Police of the Presidium of the Police Force and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), as members of the National Contact Point of the European Migration Network (EMN) in the Slovak Republic, organised a series of thematic meetings focused on legal and illegal migration of third-country nationals to Slovakia. The meetings took place on 16 – 17 March, 21 – 22 September and 6 – 7 December 2023 in Malatiny.
The working meetings brought together representatives of selected institutions involved in the development and implementation of legislation concerning migration of third-country nationals. Their aim was to exchange information on relevant legislative changes in the area of legal and illegal migration and their impact on practice. The discussions focused on current issues related to residence matters, the visa regime, returns and cooperation with other ministries and institutions.
Participants discussed in particular the application of Act No. 404/2011 Coll. on Residence of Foreigners and its amendments, practical issues related to the implementation of the EU visa regime, and challenges in practice concerning legal migration of third-country nationals. The programme also covered topics related to the return of third-country nationals and possible solutions to identified problematic areas.
The meetings also included presentations of current EMN outputs relevant to the participants’ areas of work. Through these activities, the European Migration Network supported expert discussion, knowledge exchange and cooperation among actors working in the field of migration at national level.
