Register for the EMN Educational Seminar on Migration and learn more about migration, migrants' vulnerabilities and trafficking in human beings

International Organization for Migration (IOM) as the coordinator of the European Migration Network (EMN) in Slovakia has launched the registration for the 9th EMN Educational Seminar on Migration: Protection of Migrants in Vulnerable Situations, which will take place from 3 to 5 July 2023 in Bratislava. You can register until 16 July 2023.

This year the seminar will take place as an in-person event only, in Bratislava and the participants will obtain certificates of participation.

The English and Slovak interpretation will be provided during the seminar.

Target group:

Professionals from the Slovak state and public administration, non-profit sector, research institutions and academia who deal with or are interested in the topics related to migration and international protection are encouraged to register.

The event is also open to participants coming from abroad, mainly members of other EMN National Contact Points.

Seminar’s topics:

Day 1: Vulnerabilities, rights and protection of migrants
We will introduce the seminar by focusing on specific vulnerabilities of migrants that are related to health, job and gender.

Day 2: Power of the passport and phenomenon of migrant caravans
During the second day, we will discuss power of the passport, smuggling, migrant caravans and ways to protect undocumented migrants or migrants in irregular situations.

Day 3: Modern slavery and the law
The third seminar day will be dedicated to the modern slavery and effective protection of victims of human trafficking. A two-time Pulitzer Prize winner will give us tips on how to better communicate and write about the sensible topic.

Seminar’s lecturers:

We will host experts from Belgium, the Netherlands, Kenya, Italy, United Kingdom, the USA and other countries.

• Katarina Schwarz - Assistant Professor in Antislavery Law and Policy & Associate Director of the Rights Lab, at the University of Nottingham, United Kingdom
• Martha Mendoza - Investigative Journalist & Pulitzer prize-winner, Associated Press (AP), USA
• Melissa Siegel - Professor of Migration Studies at United Nations University-MERIT and Maastricht University, The Netherlands
• Michele LeVoy - Director of the Platform for International Cooperation on Undocumented Migrants (PICUM), Belgium
• Simona Carnino - a freelance Journalist and Documentarist, Italy

Accompanying programme:

In the evenings, film screenings for the public will be organized in Kino Mladosť. On 3 July, a documentary The New Europeans about migration and foreigners in the European Union will close the first seminar day. The film screening will be followed by a discussion.

On 4 July, a movie Buoyancy about the modern slavery in the fishing industry will be screened.

As part of the seminar, the participants will have a possibility to see the stories of internally displaced persons in a virtual reality.
